JD Model 40U Transmission

Model 40U is a wide frontend Utility model which is stuck in 3rd gear, believe shifter fork may be broke, father-in-law says need to replace "top plate", I assume he means the plate with the gear shift lever. Will any model 40 "Plate"(?) work or do I need to find an exact match?
